Nine of Wands

Strength in oppositionDelaySuspensionAdjournment

Upright

The card signifies strength in opposition. If attacked, the person will meet an onslaught boldly; and his build shews that he may prove a formidable antagonist. With this main significance there are all its possible adjuncts—delay, suspension, adjournment.

Reversed

Obstacles, adversity, calamity.

A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), Part III §2

The picture

The figure leans upon his staff and has an expectant look, as if awaiting an enemy. Behind are eight other staves—erect, in orderly disposition, like a palisade.

Older readings

Generally speaking, a bad card.

A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), Part III §4. Waite collected these and says they often disagree with the main meanings.

Waite wrote in 1911 and some of his meanings show it. Tarot is a tradition of reflection, not a prediction, and no card decides anything for you.
